CHAPTER 4
How to Build an Outrageously Talented Team
WHEN I HIRE KEY PEOPLE, Iâm trying to achieve a two-part goal: accomplish big things and have fun doing it. Thereâs nothing contradictory about this when you have the right people in placeâand if you can do it at scale, youâll have an organization that can pursue big goals.
CEOs tend to get credit for the accomplishments of the teams they lead, but in reality, the most important thing a CEO does is recruit superlative people who have a combination of impressive traits. Talent is a must of course, but itâs equally important to hire quality people who are capable of constructive interactions with others.
In an earlier chapter, I made the point that aiming for perfection can be counterproductive; good is usually good enough. But if youâre going to break that rule for one thing in business, break it for people. Make your hiring choices as perfect as they can be because there are few mistakes costlier than hiring the wrong person. I want to step away from specific skill sets here and give you the view from the top.
